Honeycomb Rocks
Monongahela National Forest, West Virginia
The Honeycombs Rock Trail is located on the Highland Scenic Highway, State Route 150, near the town of Marlinton, West Virginia.
Honeycomb Rocks are a world-class example of a quartz boxwork Hematite deposit—two geologic processes interact to produce the striking pattern in the boulders: rock bending and folding during mountain building, and differing rates of weathering.
Kids will especially enjoy the unique patterns found on these unusual rock formations—so if you find yourself driving the scenic highway stop and stretch your legs on this easy 0.25-mile loop trail.
