Charlies Bunion

Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee/North Carolina

Charlies Bunion, a scenic jumble of bare, jagged cliffs along the world-famous Appalachian Trail (AT), is a spectacular day hike destination for anyone exploring the Great Smoky Mountains—the trailhead can be found along the crest of the Smokies at the Newfound Gap Overlook, it’s located on the northeast end of the parking lot between the rest rooms and the Rockefeller Memorial.

Spectacular mountain views, spring wildflowers, summer vistas, and autumn foliage are just a few of the perks encountered along this amazing day hike—the AT crests over Newfound Gap, following a rooted and rocky rise on the Tennessee/North Carolina border, allowing for open views and sweeping mountain panoramas.

The trail climbs in earnest for the first 1.5 miles, ascending through a high-elevation mixed hardwood and pine forest, before descending 0.2 mile to the Sweat Heifer Creek Trail junction—from the junction, the AT once again climbs steeply, passing an open view into North Carolina where you might catch a glimpse of Newfound Gap Road, Clingman’s Dome, and perhaps Bryson City. Continue hiking until you reach the Boulevard Trail junction at 2.7 miles—hikers heading to Mount LeConte will bear left along this path. Keep following the AT to spend the day admiring Charlies Bunion.

From the Boulevard Trail junction and the treks highest elevation (6,222ft), the AT continues northeast toward the Icewater Spring Backcountry Shelter—a short side path to the right leads to the shelter and decent views of the Smokies.

Back on the Appalachian Trail, the path crosses Icewater Spring and then it’s an easy 1 mile trek to your destination—the trail drops steeply to the spur trail leading out to Charles Bunion. The spur climbs a rugged and craggy path to the exposed rock outcropping—prepare yourself for amazing views!

Charlies Bunion, a rare bare-rock Smoky Mountain summit similar to The Chimney Tops, is characterized by a large jumble of jagged boulders on the mountains sheer north face—the promontory rises to an elevation of 5,565 ft and straddles the Tennessee/North Carolina state lines. Views from Charles Bunion are absolutely amazing but mind your footing as you scramble among the boulders—people have fallen in this area and its especially important to watch young kids. Find a safe spot among the rocks, crack open that backpack and enjoy your picnic lunch and the incredible views!
