Creation of the Images/Photo Equipment
Some of the most common questions regarding my photography are about the equipment used to produce the images, so here is a little bit about what I use to shoot my photos. I carry with me, on most adventures, two 35mm camera bodies. Both bodies are made by Minolta; with one I shoot slides and with the other I shoot prints. The two camera bodies that I use are: the Minolta Maxxum 7000 (this body was used exclusively until 2000) and the Minolta Maxxum 9. I have quite an arsenal of lenses but the ones I use the most are: Sigma 20mm, Minolta 24mm, Tamron 28-300mm XR, Minolta 70-210mm, and the Tokina 300mm f2.8 lens. In most situations I use a polarizing filter. My films of choice are Fuji Velvia slide film and Agfa Ultra 100 print film; I like both of these films due to their high color saturation. To get my images in a digital format I scan them using the HP scanjet 5470c or the Nikon Coolscan IV. The images are then saved using either Microsoft Digital Image Pro 7.0, or Adobe Photoshop CS.
Update: In 2005 I added to my photographic equipment the Canon 20D Digital SLR, and so far I am completely satisfied with the images produced from this camera.
Underwater images shot after 2003 are taken with the Canon s400 digital in a dedicated Canon underwater housing. Pick is our underwater master and she swears by this system, and I think the images speak for themselves.
Underwater Update: All underwater photos taken after 2005 are taken with a Canon sd550 in a dedicated Canon underwater housing.
Artist Information Statement
Photographic images of the natural world are our way of preserving and protecting the outstanding beauty that surrounds us; whether it is a sweeping landscape, a bloom on a flower, or a wild animal in its natural habitat. All of these subjects give us a sense of connection and they renew our spirit with overwhelming emotion. In each of our images we try to convey a sense of place, and a feeling of reverie for the special beauty that is inherent in all that is nature. Our images represent over 20 years of capturing just the right moment. Sometimes serendipity is involved, and sometimes it takes the ability to know your subject well enough to be in the right place at the right time. All of our images are captured in natural light with no modification of the natural environment (such as the placing of objects, or the removal of objects, i.e. removing branches or adding colorful leaves). In addition, no computer enhancement or digital manipulation is used in the creation of the photographs. Our hope is that our photographs inspire others to see what our world has to offer, and that they create a desire to protect these places for many generations to come.
About the Artists
Cyd Read and T. Pickering have been capturing breath-taking images of the natural world since 1986, but just began selling their images in 2003. A love of travel and a sense of adventure have led the Natural Born Hikers to several remote locations around the world, some seen by only a small percentage of people. Many of the photographs were taken in areas only accessible by foot, requiring hikes of anywhere from 10 to 25 miles, carrying heavy photo equipment. Their dedication to preserving these special places on film is a never-ending quest, and it is a quest that they enjoy immensely. The love of such adventure is quite evident in the work of Natural Born Hikers', and each image is sure to be a conversation starter as well as a piece of artwork.
Their work has been published in numerous formats including: calendars, text books, websites, greeting cards, educational programs, the cover of a novel, newspapers, and used in a commerative coin collection.
Okay, well that covers just about everything, but if you have any questions please don’t hesitate to email us.
